Everyone goes on vacation at some point, or at least they should. That means bringing your belongings along. Most airlines charge for checking baggage, so you have got to get as much possible into that one carry-on bag. Here are a few tips on how to pack like a pro.
A child’s story tells a tale of a pack-rat who’s mouse friend gives him the adage: “You can have stuff or space.” With suitcase-packing, the objective is to arrive at a “middle way” of both: all your stuff in one space. Start with the suitcase lying open and empty in front of you.
Put the heavy things in the bottom, like shoes. But first, fill your shoes. Shoes are great places to pack little things: stuff them full of socks, underwear, toiletry items, whatever. This has two purposes: One, you make the most of your suitcase space, and two, you retain the shape of your shoes so they don’t get mushed.
Start laying in folded pants and shirts. If you have fragile items, like CDs, ornaments, etc, nestle them inbetween these layers so they are protected. Wrap belts around the suitcased, like a lining around the clothes and items in the middle. Fill in corners with socks and other small items.
Bear in mind that you will eventually be tipping this on end to roll it or carry it, and count on it being turned every which way when handled by baggage personnel. If you are carrying something fragile, make sure it is well-wrapped and cushioned.
