Packing Like a Pro

Everyone goes on vacation at some point, or at least they should. That means bringing your belongings along. Most airlines charge for checking baggage, so you have got to get as much possible into that one carry-on bag. Here are a few tips on how to pack like a pro.

A child’s story tells a tale of a pack-rat who’s mouse friend gives him the adage: “You can have stuff or space.” With suitcase-packing, the objective is to arrive at a “middle way” of both: all your stuff in one space. Start with the suitcase lying open and empty in front of you.

Put the heavy things in the bottom, like shoes. But first, fill your shoes. Shoes are great places to pack little things: stuff them full of socks, underwear, toiletry items, whatever. This has two purposes: One, you make the most of your suitcase space, and two, you retain the shape of your shoes so they don’t get mushed.

Start laying in folded pants and shirts. If you have fragile items, like CDs, ornaments, etc, nestle them inbetween these layers so they are protected. Wrap belts around the suitcased, like a lining around the clothes and items in the middle. Fill in corners with socks and other small items.

Bear in mind that you will eventually be tipping this on end to roll it or carry it, and count on it being turned every which way when handled by baggage personnel. If you are carrying something fragile, make sure it is well-wrapped and cushioned.

Vacations are planned in the intent of enjoying a relaxing, fun and perhaps adventurous time. In other cases, people travel abroad for their jobs. When you plan on a trip overseas, you usually plan to be gone only for a certain amount of time. Sadly, some travelers don’t make it back home due to accidents, natural disasters and other tragic events. As scary as this sounds, you shouldn’t let the unknown ruin your travel plans. However, if something unexpected were to happen, you wouldn’t want to leave your loved ones in a bind.

Travel insurance covers medical expenses, changes in travel arrangements and extended stays. One thing some travelers aren’t aware of is that this type of insurance can also cover expenses that a traditional life insurance policy might not cover. A typical life insurance policy covers funeral and burial costs. In addition, you may have opted for a large enough premium so that your dependents are cared for in the event of your absence. If you pass away while overseas, your life insurance policy will likely uphold the terms that you originally signed up for. However, there may be a problem in terms of getting you back home.

Traveling over to certain areas of the world is usually more risky than others. Purchasing a travel insurance policy can help your family pay for expenses related to an unanticipated death. This might include bringing you back to your country for a burial, or even having a funeral overseas. This is unpleasant to think about, but such a situation could be detrimental without any coverage.

The Benefits of Group Travels

Many people are now looking into the option of group travels when it comes time to go on a trip or take a vacation.  Group travels involve a few different people, usually friends or family members getting together and going on a big vacation.  There are many advantages of group travels.  Here is a look at some of the benefits of traveling this way.

One of the biggest benefits of group travels is the fact that you can save quite a bit of money traveling this way.  So long as you do not mind sharing transportation or hotel rooms with the people you are traveling with, it can make for a fun, inexpensive vacation.  You can easily rent a large vehicle and do a road trip somewhere fun or share a large hotel room with a group of friends.  Some places also offer special discounts to large groups traveling.  These discounts can apply to dining out, going to clubs and theme parks. There are also special travel packages you can take advantage of when you are doing a group travel that otherwise would not be available if you were traveling alone.

Another benefit of group travels is it is ultimately safer.  There is safety in numbers and when you are in a group it makes you less of a target for those who have bad intentions.  Because you are safer in a large group it opens up bigger selection of travel options.  Those who travel in groups can go to exotic, far away places that may seem unsafe for sole travelers.

Lastly, group travels are beneficial because they are simply fun.  While it is always great to get away and have some alone time there is something special about getting together with a group of people you like and love and going on a new adventure.  It is a good way to strengthen bonds, form new friendships, relationships and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Traveling with children of any age can be difficult but when it comes to traveling with toddlers it can prove to be extra difficult. They have very short attention spans and are often prone to throwing tantrums and fits which can make certain activities difficult.  Here is a look at some vacation ideas for those who are traveling with toddlers.

Many families with toddlers learn that they enjoy their vacation more when they stick closer to home.  Many toddlers have trouble sleeping at new places including hotels so being able to go home at night is a great way to keep them in their comfort zone and keep the stress levels downs.  In addition to this it is also a good way to save some extra money.  Check out local activities that the whole family can enjoy together such as local beaches, state parks, zoos or kids museums.  If parents want a night out then they can enlist the help of a babysitter or family member.

Family friendly theme parks are another excellent option for vacations with toddlers.  Avoid theme parks that just have fast roller coasters or rides that toddlers cannot go on and instead opt for theme parks that have something for everyone.  Be sure to pace yourself and avoid trying to do everything in one day.  Take advantage of special discounted tickets where you can go additional days.  This allows you to have fun together as a family and give everyone a chance to enjoy themselves.

A cruise with a fun theme is another excellent option for traveling and vacationing with toddlers.  There are certain cruise lines that are very family friendly and offer fun themes that toddlers will love.  These cruises include activities that are great for both toddlers and older kids and often include child care when parents want a night to themselves. The cabins on these cruises are also usually filled with the same conveniences of home making it easier to get toddlers to calm down and sleep at night.

When people think of vacations they often assume that you have to spend a lot of money in order to have a good time.  In actuality you can still take a vacation and have fun while sticking to a budget.  Here is a look at some ideas for inexpensive vacations for people and families that are on a budget.

Avoid flying or traveling and stick to home and local attractions.  If you can afford it, take a few days off of work and use some vacation time and check out all the local attractions near your home.  Many people are not aware of all the neat things there are to do and see that are fairly close to where they live.  You will save money not only in airfare but hotel lodging by getting to come home every night.  Another way to save some money this way is to see if they offer any special discounts for local residents.  This is a great way to still get a vacation feeling but without spending all the extra money.  You can take part in local theme parks, shop at outlet malls, visit museums and much more.

Another excellent idea for an inexpensive vacation is to see if you have a friend or some friends who want to pitch in and go on a road trip.  Chances are you have friends or family members in the same boat who would love a vacation but cannot afford anything extravagant.  Instead, get together and see if you can go on a small vacation together.  You can share the costs of gas, food and lodging saving everyone money.

Lastly, consider a camping trip.  There are many great campgrounds that offer fun activities such as hiking, fishing or swimming.  Many state parks also offer camping at a cheap price.

Eating Healthy During Vacations

Vacations are a great way to get out and away from the every day boredom and do something different and fun.  For those who are trying to stick to a healthy diet or those who are attempting to lose weight though, vacations can prove to be very difficult.  There is a lot of eating out and unhealthy foods that can be very tempting.  Here is a look at eating healthy during vacations and how to avoid falling off the diet wagon.

Depending upon where you are staying during your vacation see if there is any way you can pack your own foods.  If you are going to be staying at a hotel or resort, ask for a room with a small refrigerator. This will enable you to go to a local grocery store and pick up a small amount of healthier foods to eat and prepare. When doing this, try to eat at the hotel room before going out.  This will help you avoid the temptation of picking up something quick and unhealthy.  Not only will this help you eat healthier during a vacation but it will likely also save you money since you will not be eating out.

If you still want to take part in dining out while on vacation first do some research on what restaurants are in the area.  Most restaurants have online menus that you can look at. This will help you in deciding where you want to go to eat and what restaurants offer foods that are friendly to the type of diet you are trying to maintain.

While on vacation if you do find that you fall off the diet wagon and eat something that is unhealthy, do not beat yourself up about it. Instead, take the next day to be extra careful and try to do an activity that involves some extra exercise.  Go for a long walk around the city, do some hiking or go swimming for a while.

Carrying Your Cash on Vacation

Published on 25. Feb, 2011 by in Travel, Travel Tips

Vacations are the kind of thing that really should not be stressful at all. Unfortunately, most vacations end up being stressful for a reason that is annoyingly close to the usual reason — money. While you obviously have enough budgeted to get to, stay at and get back from your vacation, everything else is completely up to your discretion. Some especially frugal people (such as broke college students) can travel across the country on a couple of hundred dollars and not miss a thing. But for most of us, the act of going on vacation involves the ritual of ever-so-briefly spending as though we were rich. While it is obviously just a fantasy, it is one of the hallmarks of being on a vacation, instead of just taking a few days off.

The entire nature of a vacation implies that you are going to carry money around with you, for all of the usual things you want to do — only more of them. There are tolls, restaurants, shows, cafes, museums and all of the other great things that just are not free. And while cash is generally accepted everywhere, it does not offer you the kind of protection you want. After all, if you are nowhere near home (possibly in a foreign country), being broke means you are suddenly going to have a lot less fun.

Fortunately, you have plenty of options. You can use a regular credit card, or a prepaid credit card. These are easy to use, are protected if they’re lost or stolen, and are accepted most places. Naturally, travelers checks are even safer, but they may be hard to use. And as unsafe as it is to carry large amounts of cash, sometimes you need it (such as when you take a cab), so carrying a small amount is a risk you should probably take. After everything, it might actually be best to carry some of every kind of money.

If you have a vacation you have always dreamed about taking but have thought it was not possible because of your financial state, there are ways to save some extra money through the year and cut back on certain expenses so you can finally take your dream vacation.  Here is a look at some ways to save for a vacation.

To begin with if you have not already done so, look at your budget and what you spend each month. Keep a list of what you spend your money on and at the end of the month take a good look at it and determine where most of your money goes.  Many people find that they spend more than they thought they were on activities such as eating out or getting a morning cup of coffee.  If you find you do this as well, consider cutting back how much you eat out and take a cup of coffee with you instead.  Take the difference saved and put it away.

Another way to save for a vacation is to set up a special savings account just for the venture.  You can talk to your bank and see what sort of options they have available to you. If you have been banking with them for a while they may be able to give you some good options on some savings accounts that accrue interest.  That will give you extra money without having to do anything.  Once you have your savings account set up, make it a point to put a small amount of money into it each week.  Some people take all the loose change they have and put it into their savings account for their vacation and are surprised at how quickly it adds up.
